Bohemia Interactive’s war simulator Arma Reforger utilizes the rugged topography of Tenerife to create the fictional, tactically complex landscape of its "Kolguyev" map.

Tenerife’s unique landscape has become a secret weapon in the world of digital entertainment. As noted by industry experts, the island’s rugged terrain serves as the foundation for "Kolguyev," a fictional setting in the popular war simulator Arma Reforger, created by the Czech studio Bohemia Interactive.

This connection between the Canary Island and the gaming world is nothing new; it spans over two decades. Back in 2001, the studio used Tenerife’s distinct silhouette and geography for its game Operation Flashpoint: Cold War Crisis. Rather than aiming for a realistic depiction of the island’s towns or culture, the developers used its topography as a blank canvas to build a Soviet-controlled war zone.

Translating real-world geography into a virtual space requires adjusting the scale. While Tenerife is quite large, the Arma Reforger map is condensed to about 39.79 square kilometers. This smaller size is designed to prioritize gameplay, focusing on military bases, mining sites, and abandoned settlements rather than perfect geographical accuracy. Even though the game’s setting is named after a real island in the Barents Sea, the mountains and coastline players explore are unmistakably those of Tenerife.

Using real-world terrain is a common strategy in military simulations because natural landscapes offer a level of tactical complexity that computer-generated environments struggle to match. For players, the result is a map that feels authentic and challenging. The latest update to Arma Reforger not only improves the visuals compared to the 2001 original but also highlights how Spanish geography continues to shape the world of combat gaming.
