Tenerife’s La Candelaria Hospital Upgrades Maternity Unit with New Emergency Operating Room
Tenerife’s Nuestra Señora de Candelaria University Hospital has invested over 650,000 euros to modernize its maternity unit with a new, dedicated operating room designed to expedite emergency care.
The Nuestra Señora de Candelaria University Hospital in Tenerife has invested over 650,000 euros to modernize its maternity unit. The centerpiece of this upgrade is a new, dedicated operating room located directly within the delivery ward, designed to provide faster care for emergency complications during childbirth.
Previously, patients needing an emergency cesarean section had to be transported to the hospital’s main surgical block. This move often caused critical delays during high-risk situations. By placing the operating room inside the Gynecology and Obstetrics department, the hospital can now perform life-saving procedures much faster while maintaining strict safety and sterility standards.
To support this new facility, the hospital has bolstered its team with 16 specialists, including obstetricians, anesthesiologists, midwives, and nursing staff. Recent additions to the team—including two nurses, an auxiliary nursing care technician, and a hospital porter—ensure the unit is fully equipped to handle high patient demand.
Since it opened in 1966, La Candelaria Hospital has supported more than 127,000 births. Last year alone, the center managed 2,407 births, including 49 sets of multiples, with an average maternal age of 33. These upgrades reflect the hospital’s ongoing commitment to evolving its facilities to meet modern medical standards, where every second counts in ensuring the best outcomes for mothers and babies.
