Tenerife's "El Mercado de Nito" Boosts Local Farming
"El Mercado de Nito," a new farmers market in Tegueste, Canary Islands, aims to boost the local economy and promote sustainable eating by connecting consumers directly with fresh, locally-grown produce.
Eating healthy is super important for staying well. Choosing things like fruits, veggies, and fresh food is good for your body. Plus, it helps local farmers and means you're eating food that's good for the environment.
In the Canary Islands, farming is a big deal. More and more people are trying to connect local farms with the people who eat their food.
One example is "El Mercado de Nito," which opened on October 23rd in Tegueste. It's on the Carretera General El Portezuelo, Las Toscas, 174. The idea is for it to become a go-to place for local food and help the economy in northeastern Tenerife.
The project is run by Sergio Rodríguez Gutiérrez, who everyone calls Nito online. He's a young farmer from the Canary Islands who's known for caring about the land, supporting local farming, and being friendly with his customers.
At El Mercado de Nito, you'll find fruits and vegetables that are in season, grown by local farmers. It's designed to feel like a cozy part of the Canarian countryside, so people can really enjoy their shopping experience.
The goal is to encourage people to buy food in a way that's good for the environment and supports the community. By bringing food straight from the farm to the customer, they want to strengthen the connection between the people who grow, sell, and buy the food.
It's also meant to be a place where you can only find products grown in the Canary Islands.
If you can't make it to the market, you can also order online. The website makes it easy to buy fresh, high-quality products from home.
They ship orders on Mondays and Wednesdays to make sure everything stays fresh. You can pick out individual fruits and vegetables or choose one of their pre-made boxes.
Sergio Rodríguez, or Nito, became well-known in 2021 after a social media campaign to sell a big watermelon harvest that had been affected by bad weather.
He asked people to help him avoid wasting the watermelons, and the response was huge. It changed his career.
Since then, Nito has become a leading voice in Canarian farming. He uses social media to talk about the importance of farming, promote local food, and highlight sustainable farming practices in the Islands.
