Tenerife’s El Cabezo Beach Closed Due to Fecal Contamination
Authorities in Granadilla de Abona, Tenerife, have closed El Cabezo beach to swimmers after routine testing revealed enterococci levels exceeding safe health limits.
Local authorities in Granadilla de Abona, Tenerife, have closed El Cabezo beach to swimmers following routine water quality tests. The City Council announced on Tuesday that levels of enterococci—bacteria often used as an indicator of fecal contamination—have exceeded safe health limits.
As part of standard safety protocols, the beach will remain closed to swimmers while officials conduct follow-up tests to determine if the contamination is a one-time occurrence or a persistent issue.
The beach will only reopen once new water samples confirm it is safe for the public. In the meantime, the City Council is urging visitors to follow the instructions of lifeguards and security staff, who are on-site to ensure no one enters the water. While such closures are a common part of managing urban beaches, they highlight the importance of regular monitoring to protect public health.
