Tenerife’s Casa Lercaro Museum to Undergo Major Safety and Infrastructure Renovation
Tenerife’s historic Casa Lercaro is undergoing a €327,061 renovation to modernize its electrical and fire safety systems while preserving the 16th-century mansion’s cultural integrity.
Casa Lercaro, which houses the Museum of History and Anthropology of Tenerife, is set for a major upgrade to its electrical and telecommunications systems to address serious safety concerns. The Island Council’s museum department has launched a renovation project to replace outdated facilities that currently pose a risk to the building—a protected site of cultural interest—and limit the museum's daily operations.
A technical assessment for the €327,061 project highlights significant vulnerabilities, including cluttered electrical panels, overcrowded conduits, and exposed wiring that fail to meet modern fire safety standards. Because the building is a 16th-century mansion located in the UNESCO World Heritage site of La Laguna, all work must be carried out with extreme care to preserve its historical integrity.
The seven-month renovation goes beyond simple repairs. The plan includes installing discreet electrified rails and custom furniture to hide new wiring, minimizing the visual impact on the museum’s rooms. The project also introduces fiber-optic connectivity, linking the museum to the nearby Casa Saavedra to centralize communications and provide reliable Wi-Fi throughout the building.
A large portion of the budget is dedicated to fire safety. This includes installing advanced alarm systems and fireproof seals between floors to prevent the spread of fire. These upgrades are essential not only for safety but also to allow for the future modernization of the museum’s exhibits. By integrating 21st-century technology into this historic landmark, the Council aims to improve accessibility and provide the infrastructure needed for modern audiovisual displays while protecting the mansion’s unique heritage.
