Tenerife's Izaña Observatory still holds Spain's record for the highest wind gust, reaching 248 kilometers per hour during Tropical Depression Delta in 2005.

In 2025, it will be 20 years since Tenerife set a very unusual record. It's not about tourism, the volcano, concerts, or dancing.

Tenerife is known for many things, and weather is one of them. The Canary Islands have often been in the news for their unique weather.

Meteorologist Mario Picazo points out that Tenerife has held Spain's record for the highest wind gust since 2005.

Picazo explained on social media that the Izaña Observatory in Tenerife, at 2,384 meters high, recorded a wind gust of 248 kilometers per hour on November 28, 2005, during Tropical Depression Delta.

Storm Delta hit the Canary Islands on November 28 and 29, 2005. While coastal winds reached 150 kilometers per hour, the winds were much stronger in the higher parts of Tenerife, setting a record that still stands today.
