Tenerife Road Network Reaches Breaking Point Amid Chronic Gridlock

Tenerife’s road network has reached a breaking point as surging vehicle numbers and inadequate infrastructure lead to chronic gridlock, most recently exacerbated by heavy rainfall on the TF-5 motorway.

Tenerife’s road network is under immense pressure, with new data from the Island Council confirming that the system has reached its breaking point. This past Tuesday, the TF-5 motorway ground to a halt, with traffic backed up from the capital all the way to Tacoronte, particularly between Santa Cruz and Guamasa.

The gridlock began around 3:00 p.m., highlighting just how vulnerable the island’s two main motorways—the North and South routes—are to any disruption. In this case, the combination of too many cars and heavy rain from a passing cold front proved too much for the infrastructure to handle.

However, this is more than just a one-off traffic jam; it is a symptom of a deeper structural problem. The number of vehicles on the island continues to grow, but the road network has remained largely unchanged. Because public transport and road capacity haven't kept pace with this growth, mobility has become one of the island's most difficult challenges. Residents are increasingly reliant on private cars, which not only leads to constant traffic jams but also hurts productivity and lowers the quality of life for those forced to build these delays into their daily lives.
