Tenerife Road Network Awarded National Sustainability Seal for Carbon Reduction

Tenerife’s road infrastructure management has reached a new sustainability milestone. The island’s Council (Cabildo) recently announced that its Technical Service for Roads and Mobility has been awarded the "I Reduce" (Sello Reduzco) seal. This official certification, granted by Spain’s Ministry for the Ecological Transition, confirms that the island has successfully lowered the carbon footprint of its land transport network.

Managed by the Spanish Climate Change Office, the recognition follows a rigorous audit of the Council’s performance between 2020 and 2024. The assessment tracked fossil fuel usage across more than 1,400 kilometers of road maintenance, as well as the energy consumption of public lighting and operational facilities.

This accreditation is significant because it evaluates the entire life cycle of public infrastructure management. It also aligns with the national Law on Climate Change and Energy Transition, which mandates that local governments adopt more ambitious decarbonization strategies. Building on this success, the Cabildo has launched a 2025–2029 Reduction Plan, aiming to further decrease the road network’s reliance on conventional energy sources.

Dámaso Arteaga, head of the Roads department, stated that the certification reinforces the Council’s environmental goals. The objective, he explained, is to move beyond basic road maintenance and transform the network into an asset that minimizes its ecological impact, in line with current national sustainability standards for public mobility.
