Tenerife Restaurant Owners Struggle as 'Dine and Dash' Incidents Rise

Hospitality business owners in the Canary Islands are increasingly turning to social media to expose customers who dine and dash, citing the high costs and legal hurdles that make formal prosecution difficult.

Small business owners are once again speaking out about the frustration of dealing with customers who refuse to pay their bills. The issue recently came to light after El Cañonazo, a guachinche in El Tablero, shared a public complaint online. On Saturday, August 22, two customers left the restaurant without paying for their meal and even took their leftovers with them.

Security footage captured the incident, sparking a wider conversation about how vulnerable hospitality businesses are to this type of behavior. The owners expressed their frustration over the lack of effective legal support, noting how difficult it is to identify the culprits or recover their financial losses through official channels.

This is not an isolated problem in the Canary Islands. While these actions are legally classified as fraud or minor theft, the high cost of legal fees and the difficulty of gathering evidence often discourage business owners from filing formal complaints.

Cases across Tenerife vary significantly. In one instance at a restaurant in Cruz Chica, the perpetrators accidentally left a mobile phone behind, making them easy to track. In another case at the guachinche El Fogón, a relative eventually stepped in to pay off a 200-euro debt left by someone else. These incidents highlight the challenges faced by the hospitality industry, where, in the absence of faster legal protections, many owners feel forced to turn to social media to call out those who cheat them.
