Tenerife's reservoirs reached 34% capacity in December, a 7.5% monthly increase ensuring sufficient irrigation water for farmers due to recent water management measures.

Tenerife's reservoirs ended December 34% full, a 7.5% increase from the previous month. The island council, Cabildo de Tenerife, says this guarantees enough irrigation water for farmers across the island.

Valentín González, the island's Minister for the Primary Sector, called these figures "a firm step towards stable water supplies for Tenerife's farms." He said the improvement was due to measures put in place after a water emergency was declared. These measures include producing more desalinated water and making the water network more efficient.

Tenerife's reservoirs currently hold 1,708,061 cubic meters of water. This is 373,640 cubic meters more than a month ago. It's also 196,798 cubic meters more than in December last year.

Data from the Cabildo shows that the northern part of the island has seen the biggest increase in water reserves. Its reservoirs now store 704,327 cubic meters more than in December 2024, a significant growth that helps the island better cope with possible droughts.

On the other hand, in the south of the island, where BALTEN manages both fresh and recycled water, there's been a temporary drop in stored water compared to last year. This is due to planned work at the Valle San Lorenzo reservoir, which holds recycled water. They are currently preparing to re-waterproof its lining, which temporarily reduces how much water it can hold.

Despite this specific drop, González says the overall trend is "clearly positive" and expects the amount of irrigation water to keep increasing.

"We expect water storage to continue growing steadily until next spring, solidifying the recovery of the island's water reserves."
