Tenerife Rental Cars Sabotaged Amid Rising Anti-Tourism Protests

Authorities in Tenerife are investigating the sabotage of eleven rental cars in Los Silos, marking a recurring trend of anti-tourism vandalism amid rising social tensions over mass tourism in the Canary Islands.

Growing social tension over tourism in the Canary Islands has led to a new wave of vandalism in Tenerife. Authorities are investigating an incident in the coastal town of Los Silos, where eleven rental cars were sabotaged in the early hours of March 1st. The Civil Guard is currently treating the act as a potential protest against tourist overcrowding.

This is not the first time the area has seen such activity. Previously, anti-tourist graffiti appeared near a local landmark, the whale skeleton. These recurring incidents, specifically targeting rental vehicles, suggest a deliberate effort to protest the tourism industry in a town that hosts many British and German visitors during the autumn and winter months.

The formal complaints filed with the Civil Guard have raised fresh concerns about the safety of tourism infrastructure. The incident bears a striking resemblance to an attack on March 5, 2023, in Costa Adeje, where twenty rental cars were damaged. In that case, the perpetrators shared images of the destruction on social media, using the posts to criticize large tourism companies and the high number of visitors to the islands.

Investigators are now working to determine if these acts of sabotage are linked to groups that have recently become more vocal in their opposition to mass tourism. By repeatedly targeting tourism transport, these vandals are creating a significant challenge for security forces, who fear that this behavior is becoming a clear sign of the growing social divide over how tourism is managed in the Canary Islands.
