A series of "peculiar" earthquakes recorded in Tenerife: what is known

In Tenerife, 22 minor earthquakes with a magnitude of up to 2 mbLg were recorded, occurring in a new active zone, but they do not pose a threat to the population.

In Tenerife, 22 minor earthquakes have been recorded in the last 24 hours. They were detected by the National Geographic Institute (IGN).

The tremors began on Monday morning and continued until Tuesday, September 23, at 8:12 AM. The earthquakes ranged in magnitude from 0.6 to 2 mbLg. The epicenters were located between the Izaña area and the peaks of La Orotava, at a depth of approximately 7 kilometers.

Itaiza Domínguez, director of IGN in the Canary Islands, explained that such phenomena are common in volcanic zones. However, this series of earthquakes is "special" because it is occurring in a new area that began to show activity this year.

According to Domínguez, these tremors are not related to magma, as was the case in La Palma in 2021. Currently, the activity is weak and infrequent.

Earlier this year, similar cases were recorded in Tenerife. According to IGN data, there were other series of earthquakes in La Orotava. This means that this area needs to be constantly monitored.

The institute constantly monitors seismic and volcanic activity in the Canary Islands. If serious changes are detected, the information is transmitted to the government of the Canary Islands to take the necessary measures.

Experts assure that the recent earthquakes do not pose a threat to people. They were minor and hardly felt by local residents.

IGN reminds that the Canary Islands are a volcanic territory, and such phenomena are part of their nature. Therefore, it is important to monitor the situation and have systems in place to help respond quickly to any unforeseen circumstances.
