Tenerife PSOE Challenges Coalition Government Ahead of 'State of the Island' Debate
The Tenerife Socialist group (PSOE) is set to challenge the island's coalition government during Friday's "State of the Island" debate, criticizing current spending priorities while proposing alternative policies on housing, mobility, and tourism.
This Friday’s "State of the Island" debate at the Tenerife Island Council is expected to be a heated political showdown. The Socialist group (PSOE), led by Tamara Raya and Aarón Afonso, plans to challenge the current coalition government—made up of the Canarian Coalition and the People's Party—accusing them of prioritizing public relations over solving the island’s structural problems.
The Socialists argue that the quality of life for residents has declined over the past three years. They have criticized the government’s spending on advertising and promotion, which they estimate at over four million euros annually—or roughly 11,000 euros per day. They are calling for stricter oversight of these funds to ensure they aren't used for political gain and have introduced ten proposals as an alternative to the current administration’s approach.
Key points in the Socialist strategy include:
- Housing: They propose a new public entity to manage home construction and renovations, alongside calls to implement rent control measures allowed under national law.
- Mobility: The PSOE argues for prioritizing essential road infrastructure, such as bus-HOV lanes on the TF-1 and TF-5 highways and various bypass projects, rather than focusing on short-term media headlines.
- Eco-tax: They are pushing for a tourism tax, with revenue earmarked for protecting natural heritage, housing, and public services. They also want to reform the management of protected areas like Teide National Park, favoring more forest rangers over private security.
- Crisis Management: In response to what they describe as a poor handling of the recent hantavirus alert, the Socialists want to establish a permanent technical committee to manage health and humanitarian crises.
The PSOE’s platform also includes supporting artisanal fishing, bringing social-health centers under public management, and pushing for progress on airport investments and the renovation of the Heliodoro Rodríguez López stadium. Through these proposals, the Socialists aim to present a clear alternative to the current government, contrasting their focus on long-term planning and public services against what they view as a focus on political marketing.
