
Tenerife Prison Officer Punched by Mentally Ill Inmate
A senior prison officer at Tenerife II prison was hospitalized after being punched in the face by a mentally ill inmate in the infirmary on the morning of Friday, December 19.
A prison officer at Tenerife II prison was attacked by an inmate on the morning of Friday, December 19. The circumstances of the assault are currently being investigated.
The victim, a senior officer, was hit in the face by a Spanish inmate while they were both in the infirmary.
Nacho Fernández, a delegate for the Tu Abandono Me Puede Matar (TAMPM) union, reported this incident. The TAMPM union has represented prison staff working under the General Secretariat of Penitentiary Institutions and the Ministry of Interior for many years.
The injured officer was taken to a hospital for evaluation after receiving a strong punch from an inmate with mental health problems.
Fernández highlighted the country's need for more specialized prison centers for inmates with mental health issues. He also stressed the importance of prison officers receiving better and more appropriate training to manage inmates suffering from mental health illnesses.
