Tenerife Prepares Traditional Gifts and Cultural Showcase for Papal Visit
Tenerife is preparing to welcome Pope Leo XIV on June 12 with a series of cultural displays and traditional gifts intended to showcase the Canary Islands' unique heritage on the international stage.
Pope Leo XIV’s visit to Tenerife next Friday, June 12, is more than just a formal occasion; it is a significant moment for cultural diplomacy. The island council (Cabildo) has carefully selected gifts that showcase the unique heritage and craftsmanship of the Canary Islands.
Cabildo President Rosa Dávila presented these gifts to Bishop Eloy Santiago of the Diocese of San Cristóbal de La Laguna, highlighting the symbolic importance of the visit. Among the items is a "manta esperancera"—a traditional wool cloak once used by mountain farmers, now reimagined as a symbol of local hospitality. The Pope will also receive a tablecloth featuring intricate drawn-thread work and rosette lace, created by master artisans Rosario Yumar Jacinto and Antonio Domingo Rodríguez Ruiz. These crafts are vital examples of local traditions that are increasingly rare in the modern, industrial age.
The liturgy at the port of Santa Cruz will also reflect the unique character of the Diocese. Representatives from Tenerife, La Palma, La Gomera, and El Hierro will participate in traditional dress, giving the ceremony a distinct regional identity. The event will also honor the relics of Father Anchieta and Brother Pedro, two figures who played a key role in spreading Catholicism from the Canary Islands to the New World.
Renowned musical groups Los Sabandeños and Chago Melián will provide the music, celebrating the island's popular culture. While Bishop Eloy Santiago noted that the Pope’s strict schedule leaves little room for changes, the visit is expected to include additional gestures of goodwill. Through this event, local authorities hope to highlight both the spiritual life of the diocese and the enduring traditions of the Canary Islands on an international stage.
