Tenerife Prepares for Annual Corpus Christi Floral and Sand Tapestry Festivals
Tenerife is celebrating its annual Corpus Christi festivities this June, featuring intricate floral tapestries in San Cristóbal de La Laguna and elaborate volcanic sand carpets in La Orotava.
June is a landmark month for Tenerife, as the island prepares for the annual Corpus Christi celebrations in San Cristóbal de La Laguna and La Orotava. More than just a religious event, this festival is a celebration of ephemeral art that draws crowds of locals and visitors alike to see the streets transformed into intricate canvases made of flowers and sand.
In La Laguna, a UNESCO World Heritage site, the tradition takes place on Sunday, June 7. The historic center becomes a community project, with families, schools, and neighborhood groups working together to create stunning floral tapestries. These carpets pave the way for the Blessed Sacrament procession following the religious service, highlighting a tradition that remains central to the town’s identity.
La Orotava offers a unique take on the festival on Thursday, June 11. Its centerpiece is a massive 900-square-meter tapestry in the Town Hall square, crafted using volcanic earth from Teide National Park. This feat of "ephemeral engineering" requires weeks of technical preparation. The day begins with church bells and a Eucharist, followed by evening events attended by Bishop Eloy Santiago before the procession winds through the streets near the parish of Nuestra Señora de la Concepción.
Beyond their religious significance, these celebrations are vital to the social and tourist life of northern Tenerife. The delicate process of carpet-making requires immense precision and months of planning. By showcasing two distinct styles—the floral art of La Laguna and the volcanic earth designs of La Orotava—these festivals continue to be a vibrant and evolving pillar of Canarian culture.
