Tenerife PP Unveils Ten-Point Roadmap Ahead of State of the Island Debate
The Tenerife Island Council’s State of the Island debate will feature a ten-point roadmap from the People’s Party, focusing on housing reform, tax relief, and enhanced social and security services.
At tomorrow’s State of the Island debate, the Tenerife Island Council will hear the People’s Party (PP) present a new ten-point roadmap for the island. The party’s proposals cover a wide range of issues, from housing reform to changes in security and tax policy.
Housing is the central focus of the PP’s strategy. To address the current shortage, the party is calling for amendments to regional land laws to speed up the construction of subsidized housing. They also plan to work with banks to create a public guarantee scheme, making it easier for people aged 18 to 35 to enter the rental market.
Economically, the party, led by Lope Afonso, wants to expand the Free Trade Zone to the port of Granadilla to improve the island’s logistics. They are also urging the central government to lower income taxes and adjust tax-exempt minimums to help residents cope with inflation. Additionally, the PP aims to support local farmers by promoting farmers' markets as a primary way to sell local goods.
In social services and healthcare, the party is proposing a new exercise program for patients with chronic illnesses and a formal support system for animal shelters. They are also pushing for financial decentralization, specifically asking the Ministry of Equality to send funding for gender-based violence support directly to Island Councils to cut through red tape and improve care for victims.
Finally, the PP’s agenda includes a focus on culture and security. They have proposed an "Island Artistic Network" to protect local heritage and folklore. Furthermore, they are seeking official support to designate National Police and Civil Guard officers as working in an "at-risk profession," while also calling for greater recognition of the island's emergency services.
