Tenerife PP Launches Strategy of Direct Opposition to National Government

The Tenerife People’s Party (PP) has kicked off the new political season with a strategy of direct opposition to the national government. During an Insular Board of Directors meeting this Saturday, attended by national deputy secretary Carmen Fúnez and regional leader Manuel Domínguez, local president Lope Afonso outlined his goal: to make the PP the island’s leading political force and the primary alternative to the current national administration.

Afonso’s address focused on two main areas: defending social services—specifically education and transport—and criticizing the Spanish government’s handling of security and migration. While acknowledging the solidarity of the Tenerife public, Afonso questioned the state’s ability to maintain stability in the Canary Islands, signaling a tougher stance as the party prepares for future elections.

Regional leader Manuel Domínguez used his time to highlight the achievements of the Canary Islands government. He pointed to improvements in youth unemployment compared to 2023 and introduced new support for the self-employed, including reduced contributions during leave and subsidies for hiring related to parental leave.

Housing and education were also key topics. Domínguez highlighted the Tenerife Island Council’s investment in new housing projects and noted that providing free textbooks is a clear example of how the party’s economic policies are directly benefiting local families.

This push by the Canarian PP comes amid intense national political division. By calling for early general elections, Domínguez is looking to capitalize on the central government's declining popularity, hoping voters will see the PP’s regional management as a superior alternative to the current national model.
