Tenerife Police Arrest Woman After Video Shows Tourist Theft Attempt
Tenerife police arrested a woman in Los Gigantes for attempted tourist theft, prompted by a social media video, revealing she had a prior warrant for similar offenses.
Police in Tenerife have arrested a woman in the south of the island, accused of trying to steal from a tourist in Los Gigantes, a town in Santiago del Teide. The arrest followed a video shared on social media, which reportedly showed her attempting to steal from a foreign tourist's handbag near the Poblado Marinero area.
Officers from the Fiscal and Border Patrol in Playa de las Américas carried out the arrest. This was part of "Operation Miradores," a special plan by the Santa Cruz de Tenerife police. The operation aims to increase police presence and monitoring in busy areas, popular with both locals and tourists. Its goal is to prevent crime and keep the public safe, highlighting how police intelligence helps spot and deal with such incidents.
During questioning, police found the woman already had an outstanding warrant for similar crimes, suggesting a history of such behavior. She was found at a hotel or similar business in Granadilla. An inspection of the business showed it hadn't followed the law requiring it to report guest information through the State Secretariat for Security's app – a key step for public safety and control. Because of this, the business was fined.
The woman and the case details have been handed over to the courts to continue the legal process.
