Tenerife Plans €1.5 Million Infrastructure Overhaul to Protect El Pris from Future Storms
Tacoronte is collaborating with the Tenerife Island Council on a 1.5 million euro infrastructure project to enhance flood defenses and drainage in the coastal neighborhood of El Pris following damage from Storm Therese.
The vulnerability of coastal areas to extreme weather is once again a major political issue in Tenerife. Following the damage caused by Storm Therese on March 24, the town of Tacoronte is working on a plan to protect the fishing neighborhood of El Pris from future floods and landslides.
The local council and residents are working closely together to manage the recovery. While the city has already spent 30,000 euros on emergency repairs and supplies, the main challenge is the local road infrastructure. The Tenerife Island Council (Cabildo) has identified the access road as the most significant project, with a planned investment of 1.5 million euros, mostly to rebuild the drainage system.
Local authorities are looking beyond simple repairs. Experts agree that the current drainage channels are inadequate, as they allowed water to flow into new, dangerous paths during the storm. The municipal government is now urging the Tenerife Island Water Council to redesign how rainwater is managed in the area.
Additionally, the local administration is requiring nearby property owners to secure their land to prevent soil from washing into the neighborhood. Officials are maintaining an open dialogue with residents and are working to coordinate with the Island Council on a comprehensive technical study. The results of these plans will be shared at future public meetings to ensure transparency as the neighborhood works toward better safety.
