Tenerife Physicians Join National Strike Against Framework Statute
The College of Physicians in Santa Cruz de Tenerife will join a national strike from December 9-12, protesting the government's proposed Framework Statute for healthcare staff, which they argue undervalues the medical profession and exacerbates doctor shortages.
The College of Physicians in Santa Cruz de Tenerife (COMTF) will join a national strike from December 9 to 12. This strike, organized by the Spanish Confederation of Medical Unions, is against the government's proposed new law for healthcare staff, known as the Framework Statute.
The College believes this new law fails to recognize the responsibility and expertise required by the medical profession. They also warned in a press release that it will make it harder for the National Health System to attract and keep talented doctors.
In the Canary Islands, this problem is even worse due to a severe shortage of medical professionals. This shortage stems from unstable job contracts, poor working conditions, and low pay. As a result, many specialists are leaving for other regions or countries where their skills and hard work are better appreciated, they added.
The Santa Cruz de Tenerife College of Physicians shares the Medical Profession Forum's concerns about the ministry's proposed Framework Statute. They highlight its "serious flaws," including an unsuitable professional classification, unclear rules for working hours, and a pay system that doesn't match the profession's responsibilities.
The professional group warned that without strong regulations to support professional excellence, work-life balance, rest, quality of care, and patient safety, these established rights are seriously at risk. They are urging professionals to support the strike.
The College of Physicians in Santa Cruz de Tenerife has also called on all its members to join the strike and attend planned gatherings. On December 9, a gathering will take place from 11:00 AM to 11:30 AM at the main entrance of the HUC hospital. Another is scheduled for December 11, from 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM, at the Government Sub-delegation in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, as well as at other hospitals and health centers.
