Tenerife is restructuring its ferry routes and port logistics to accommodate 50,000 attendees expected for the upcoming papal visit while minimizing traffic congestion on the island.

The upcoming papal visit to Tenerife is prompting a major rethink of the island's transport network. To manage the logistics of the event, the Port Authority of Santa Cruz de Tenerife is in talks with shipping companies to temporarily move ferry routes from Los Cristianos to the capital.

This change, proposed by the Bishop of Tenerife and backed by Port Authority president Pedro Suárez, is designed to help the 50,000 expected attendees reach the coastal venue more easily. By allowing residents from La Palma, La Gomera, and El Hierro to dock directly in the capital, officials hope to prevent severe traffic congestion on the Southern Highway.

The Port Authority is playing a key role in these preparations. They have opened the Los Llanos Dock—specifically the former La Candelaria container terminal—to provide extra space for the Vatican’s requirements. Working closely with the Diocese, they are also planning staggered arrival times, with gates expected to open before 8:00 a.m. to ensure a smooth flow of people.

In addition to infrastructure, organizers have planned a welcome program to keep attendees comfortable. A team of volunteers, led by Pedro López, will manage the venue, where musical performances by artists such as Los Sabandeños, Chago Melián, and Alejandro Abrante will take place. The goal is to ensure a well-organized event that minimizes long waits and sun exposure for the crowds during what is set to be a historic day for the region.
