Tenerife has opened Laurisilva in Güímar, the Canary Islands' first residential facility specifically designed to provide specialized mental health care and promote independence for elderly individuals.

Tenerife has reached a significant milestone in social and healthcare services with the opening of Laurisilva in Güímar. This is the Canary Islands' first residential facility specifically designed for elderly people living with severe mental disorders. The center is a complete renovation of the former Jardín de Güímar assisted living facility, transformed to support a more independent and specialized way of life.

The new center offers ten residential spots and focuses on providing specialized mental health care for individuals aged 50 to 65. It is managed by the organization Salud Mental ATELSAM and overseen by the Island Institute for Social and Socio-sanitary Care (IASS), as part of a partnership between the island and regional governments.

Laurisilva is designed to work as part of a wider care network. By operating near the Tajinaste personal autonomy service, which supports about thirty people, the area has become a specialized hub for care in the municipality. This approach moves away from traditional institutional guardianship, instead creating an environment that feels like a typical Canarian home. The goal is to provide professional support that encourages active rehabilitation and helps residents maintain their independence.

At the official opening, local officials and representatives from ATELSAM emphasized the importance of moving toward more flexible living arrangements. They noted that as mental health conditions often require long-term support, it is essential to provide care that balances clinical safety with social integration, prioritizing the dignity and autonomy of every resident.
