Tenerife Opens Applications for Annual Student Linguistic Immersion Program in Ireland
The Cabildo of Tenerife has opened applications for its 12th annual linguistic immersion program, offering local students the opportunity to complete an academic year in Ireland to enhance their global competitiveness.
Tenerife is making international education a top priority, aiming to give local students the skills they need to compete in a global job market. The Cabildo of Tenerife has officially opened applications for its latest linguistic immersion program in Ireland, offering 4th-year ESO students the chance to spend a full academic year abroad. The credits earned during this time are fully recognized by the Canary Islands' education system.
This program is part of a larger scholarship initiative, with 30 of the 340 available spots reserved for students heading to the town of Kells, Ireland. The program goes beyond just classroom learning; it includes living with local host families and provides comprehensive support from the moment students prepare to leave until they return home, ensuring they settle in successfully.
Now in its 12th edition after 13 years, the program has helped nearly 3,000 students study abroad. The Cabildo chose Ireland for its stable education system and safe environment, both of which help students grow in maturity and independence.
During a recent meeting, island officials Efraín Medina and Serafín Mesa highlighted that the true value of the program lies in the life skills students gain. Beyond improving their English, students develop the adaptability and sense of responsibility that are essential for their future careers.
The success of this initiative highlights a broader shift in Spanish public education, where international experience is now seen as a vital part of academic excellence rather than just an extra benefit. Looking ahead to the 2026-2027 school year, the Cabildo remains committed to this model, aiming to bridge the opportunity gap and prepare Tenerife’s youth for a professional world that increasingly values multilingualism and a global perspective.
