Tenerife North Airport to Undergo €313 Million Modernization Plan

Tenerife North-Ciudad de La Laguna Airport is set for a major transformation following the approval of its new Master Plan, published in the Official State Gazette this Thursday, August 13. While this approval does not signal the immediate start of construction, it clears the way for a significant investment of 313.4 million euros between 2027 and 2031—a substantial increase from the 67.8 million spent in the previous cycle.

This roadmap is a response to the airport’s rapid growth, which has outpaced its original design. Los Rodeos was built to handle 6.5 million passengers, but it served 7.1 million in 2025—a sharp rise from the 3.8 million recorded in 2015. Following a busy 2024, which saw 6.76 million travelers and over 82,000 flights, the new plan aims to accommodate up to 7.68 million passengers and nearly 91,000 annual flights.

Aena, the airport operator, has ruled out expanding the runway or changing operating hours, following strong opposition from local residents regarding earlier or later flight times. Instead, the focus will be on improving ground operations. The terminal building will undergo a major renovation to expand check-in, security, boarding, and baggage claim areas, all while keeping the airport’s original architectural style.

The plan also includes reorganizing parking for long-stay vehicles, rentals, and public transport. These changes will be coordinated with local road improvements, such as the expansion of the TF-5 highway, and will integrate with future transit projects like the extension of Tram Line 1 and the Western Ring road.

All construction will be subject to strict environmental and heritage protections, including mandatory archaeological surveys before any earthworks begin. With the construction plans expected to be finalized this year, Aena aims to begin the bidding process in 2027, marking the start of a modernization phase designed to bring the airport up to speed with modern demand.
