Tenerife Museums to Observe Earth Hour in Climate Awareness Push
The Tenerife Museum Network will dim its exterior lights this Saturday in observance of Earth Hour to raise awareness about the climate emergency and promote long-term sustainability.
The Tenerife Museum Network is once again supporting Earth Hour this Saturday. The Museum of Nature and Archaeology (MUNA) and the Museum of Science and the Cosmos (MCC) will turn off the lights on their facades and outdoor areas from 8:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. This blackout is more than just a symbolic gesture; it is part of a broader effort to raise awareness about the climate emergency.
This initiative highlights the growing need for local authorities to lead the way in environmental change, especially in a region as vulnerable to global warming as Tenerife. José Carlos Acha, the Cabildo’s Minister of Culture, Museums, and Sports, emphasized that cultural centers have a responsibility to educate the public. By taking part, the Cabildo hopes to demonstrate its commitment to sustainability and is encouraging other island municipalities to join the movement.
These actions are important because they bring scientific issues into the public eye. With Tenerife facing more extreme weather, such as persistent droughts and heavy rainfall, museums are becoming vital hubs for sharing information. The institution has created a dedicated page on its website (https://www.museosdetenerife.org/blog/museos-de-tenerife-se-suma-a-la-hora-del-planeta-2025/) for citizens who want to learn more about the environmental goals behind this initiative. Through this effort, the Cabildo of Tenerife aims to move beyond one-off events and make environmental protection a permanent part of its political agenda.
