Tenerife Modernizes Cabildo Games with Digitalization and Sustainability Push
The Tenerife Cabildo has awarded a nearly half-million-euro contract to modernize its long-standing grassroots sports program through digital integration, sustainable uniform requirements, and mandatory diversity training.
The 40th edition of the Tenerife Cabildo Games marks a major shift in how grassroots sports are managed on the island. The Cabildo’s Governing Council has awarded a nearly half-million-euro contract to modernize the program, which has long served as a key entry point for thousands of children aged 6 to 17 to get involved in organized sports.
Last year, the games hosted 12,300 participants across 29 different disciplines. To better manage this scale, the island administration is introducing several updates. A central focus is digitalization; the Cabildo plans to launch new mobile apps to help families track schedules, results, and rankings in real time. This move is designed to simplify the coordination of events spread across the entire island.
The new contract also emphasizes social and environmental responsibility. To reduce the program's ecological footprint, all uniforms must now be made from recycled polyester. Additionally, the staff managing the games will be required to undergo specific training in equality and diversity, reinforcing the administration’s commitment to preventing discrimination in sports.
These changes are a strategic effort to keep the Cabildo Games relevant after 40 years. As public health initiatives increasingly focus on combating sedentary lifestyles among youth, the Cabildo is working to ensure this long-standing program remains an attractive, accessible, and modern option for the next generation.
