Tenerife-born midfielder Alejandro Rodríguez Gorrín has retired from professional football at age 32 following a diverse international career spanning six countries.

Alejandro Rodríguez Gorrín, a footballer from Tenerife, has announced his retirement at age 32. His career is a classic example of a common trend in Spanish sports: players who, while staying out of the national spotlight, build successful, long-term careers in international leagues. As reported by El Día, the midfielder decided to hang up his boots after a career defined by his resilience against injuries and his ability to adapt to new environments.

Gorrín’s decision follows months of consideration, as he found it increasingly difficult to meet the physical demands of professional football. After suffering serious cruciate ligament injuries while playing for Oxford United, a persistent ankle issue during his final stint with Northern Ireland’s Linfield ultimately forced his retirement. Having started his training in Santiago del Teide before moving to the Sunderland youth academy, Gorrín now plans to move into coaching from his home in the Canary Islands.

His career was far from typical. Over the years, he played in six different countries: England, New Zealand, Romania, Scotland, Portugal, and Northern Ireland. He spent four years with New Zealand’s Wellington Phoenix, an experience he credits with helping him mature personally. His time with the Romanian club Sepsi also proved to be a turning point, helping him regain his form before joining Oxford United. At Oxford, he found his greatest stability, even playing in high-profile matches against Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City in the League Cup and Newcastle in the FA Cup.

Gorrín’s journey highlights the reality for many Spanish players who, despite not playing for the country’s wealthiest clubs, find success abroad through hard work and versatility. Since leaving his hometown of Tamaimo at 16, Gorrín has followed a path similar to many other professionals from Tenerife who built their careers far from home. He retires with the satisfaction of having surpassed the goals of the teenager who first moved to the United Kingdom, and he is now looking forward to focusing on his family and his next chapter.
