Tenerife Microclimates Stun TikToker
TikToker Manu highlighted Tenerife's unique microclimates, expressing surprise at rapid weather shifts across short distances, from cool and cloudy to warm and sunny.
Tenerife boasts a unique climate that often surprises visitors. While locals are used to sudden temperature shifts, people arriving from mainland Spain or other countries are often amazed by the distinct microclimates found across the island and how much the weather can change over short distances.
This phenomenon recently caught the attention of content creator Manu (@estoesdelocos_). He's the same TikToker who previously walked around Santa Cruz de Tenerife in socks to test the cleanliness of its streets, as part of his series on the country's tidiest cities. He gave Santa Cruz a 7 out of 10 for its cleanliness. Now, he's published a new video expressing his astonishment at Tenerife's climate, admitting he's unsure what to wear.
For first-time visitors, experiencing the cool morning air that slowly turns into pleasant warmth as the day goes on is quite a surprise. While locals might take this "best climate in the world" for granted, tourists often wish they could take a piece of it home. Manu's experience perfectly illustrates this.
"Tenerife's climate is crazy, you had already warned me," the TikToker said, filming a cloudy, grey sunrise on the coast. "I just woke up, and it's really overcast and quite cool. But just ten minutes from here, everything changes completely," Manu remarked, clearly surprised.
Curious, he decided to see for himself and drove south. The change in weather left him speechless. "Let's go south and you'll see the difference," he said. "Ten minutes away, in Santa Cruz, it's really warm." Laughing, he showed a scene where some people were bundled up in warm clothes while others wore shorts. "That's how it is; you see people in sweatshirts right next to others in shorts. This is Tenerife," he added as he walked.
He then showed his own outfit, admitting he wasn't prepared as he'd only packed summer clothes. "If you're cold, you just get in the car, drive ten minutes, and it's incredibly hot," he emphasized.
Manu's surprising experience with the climate has a scientific reason. Tenerife is an island with diverse landscapes. Mount Teide, its highest peak, splits the island into two distinct areas. The northern side catches trade winds, bringing humidity, clouds, and cooler temperatures. In contrast, the more sheltered southern side enjoys a dry, sunny, and warm climate all year.
This means that within just 15 or 20 kilometers, a visitor can go from needing a jacket to wanting to find shade by the sea. It's a unique feature that makes Tenerife a place where, as Manu himself advises, "the best thing you can do is wear short sleeves, a jacket, and a sweatshirt, because the weather can change in an instant."
