Tenerife celebrates Holy Tuesday with a series of traditional religious processions and masses across the island, underscoring the deep cultural and economic significance of these long-standing local observances.

Holy Tuesday in Tenerife is more than just a religious observance; it is a vital part of the island’s social fabric and a significant boost to the local economy. Across municipalities like La Laguna, Santa Cruz, La Orotava, Puerto de la Cruz, La Victoria de Acentejo, and Granadilla de Abona, the day’s processions highlight the deep-rooted traditions and identity of local neighborhoods.

In the capital, Santa Cruz, the Parish of San Francisco de Asís will host the procession of the Lord of Tribulations at 8:15 p.m. A highlight of this event is the tradition of distributing a thousand roses to businesses on Calle La Rosa, which are then showered over the statue as it passes. Earlier, at 6:30 p.m., the Parish of San Andrés Apóstol will hold the procession of the Lord Bound to the Column, traveling through the streets of San Andrés.

La Laguna, the historic heart of the island’s Holy Week, has a busy schedule. At 6:30 p.m., the Cathedral will hold a mass for the Lord Bound to the Column, featuring the blessing of habits for new brotherhood members. Shortly after, at 6:45 p.m., the Mother Parish of Our Lady of the Conception will hold a mass for the Tears of Saint Peter, followed by a joint procession with Our Lady of Sorrows. The day concludes in La Cuesta, where the Encounter with the image of Our Father Jesus Captive will take place in the Plaza de Nuestra Señora de Candelaria between 9:00 p.m. and 9:30 p.m.

Events are taking place across the island:

  • La Orotava: A mass and procession for the Lord Bound to the Column will begin at 7:30 p.m. at the Parish of Our Lady of the Rosary in La Perdoma.
  • Puerto de la Cruz: The procession of the Lord of Humility and Patience starts at 8:00 p.m. from the Church of San Francisco, moving through areas including the Plaza del Charco and La Marina.
  • La Victoria de Acentejo: A mass and procession to the Old Calvary for the Lord Bound to the Column is set for 7:00 p.m.
  • Granadilla de Abona: An 8:00 p.m. mass will be followed by a procession featuring the Lord of the Column, the Virgin of Sorrows, and Saint John. The route heads to the Franciscan Convent, where a prayer for the deceased will be held before the images return to the church.

These events continue to draw thousands of residents, proving that Tenerife’s cultural heritage remains a vibrant and essential part of island life.
