The Spanish Civil Guard is investigating a man in Tenerife accused of stealing 9,300 euros from his 93-year-old grandfather’s bank account.

The financial vulnerability of the elderly has come under scrutiny again following a case of alleged fraud within a family in Tacoronte, Tenerife. The Civil Guard is investigating a man accused of repeatedly stealing from his 93-year-old grandfather, who currently lives in a nursing home.

The case, now before the courts, involves the theft of 9,300 euros from the grandfather’s bank account. Investigators found that the money was taken in several transactions over the first four months of 2026. The investigation began after a relative noticed suspicious activity on the account, which the grandfather confirmed he had not authorized.

Officers gathered evidence by reviewing bank records and security footage. They discovered that the grandson had obtained his grandfather’s credit card and PIN, allowing him to withdraw cash systematically.

This incident highlights a growing concern in Spain regarding financial abuse of the elderly by family members. Protecting the assets of older people, particularly those who are dependent or living in care facilities, remains a significant social and legal challenge. Under the Spanish Penal Code, crimes committed against vulnerable individuals—especially those involving a breach of trust by a relative—carry harsher penalties.
