A 61-year-old man in Tenerife is under investigation for fraud and misappropriation after allegedly keeping a lost wallet containing 600 euros and using the owner's bank cards for unauthorized purchases.

The Civil Guard has launched an investigation into a 61-year-old man from Güímar, Tenerife, for alleged fraud and misappropriation. The case began last May after a wallet was reported lost, serving as a reminder of the serious legal consequences of keeping property found in public or private spaces.

Investigators determined that the man found the wallet at a local business but failed to return it to the owner or turn it in to the authorities. Instead, he allegedly kept the 600 euros in cash and used the bank cards found inside to make several purchases.

This incident highlights the importance of civic responsibility. Under the Spanish Penal Code, keeping lost property for personal gain is a crime if the value exceeds 400 euros. Furthermore, using someone else’s payment cards is considered fraud, which carries additional legal penalties.

The man is now awaiting a hearing at the Court of First Instance and Instruction in Güímar. Police advise that anyone who finds lost property should hand it over to a lost-and-found office or the nearest police station. Financial experts also urge citizens to monitor their bank statements closely and immediately cancel any cards if they are lost or stolen to prevent unauthorized use.
