Tenerife Man Faces Animal Abuse Charges After Dog Found Abandoned in Trash Bin
A 70-year-old man in Tenerife is facing animal abuse charges after a dog was found critically injured in a trash bin and subsequently died, marking a significant test for Spain’s updated animal protection laws.
Spain’s updated animal protection laws are being put to the test again following a disturbing case in La Laguna, Tenerife. A 70-year-old man is now facing charges of animal abuse and abandonment after a dog was found suffering from severe injuries. Despite being rushed to the Valle Colino animal shelter, the dog could not be saved.
The incident began last Saturday when a municipal cleaner heard noises coming from a trash bin near the Seminario Nuevo in La Verdellada. Local police arrived to rescue the dog, a Podenco, which had sustained critical injuries. Although shelter staff provided emergency care, the dog’s condition was too severe to survive.
The Local Police’s environmental unit used the dog’s microchip to track down its owner. The suspect, a local resident involved in hunting, has since provided a statement to the police. The case file has been sent to the La Laguna courts, where a judge will decide on the appropriate legal actions and potential penalties.
This case comes as Spain continues to implement stricter laws aimed at ending animal cruelty. While the hunting community maintains that they prioritize the welfare of their dogs, this incident has reignited public debate over how working animals are monitored and treated. The ongoing court case will now examine the specific circumstances of the dog's abandonment, serving as a key test for how these new, tougher regulations are applied in practice.
