Demonstrators in Santa Cruz de Tenerife will gather Friday to protest the state public library's limited services and demand increased funding for libraries across the Canary Islands.

This Friday afternoon, the area outside the Santa Cruz de Tenerife State Public Library will be the site of another public gathering. Locals will be there to call for improvements to the library's services and resources.

The demonstration, using the slogan "Enough is enough!", is planned to coincide with Library Day. It will kick off at 6:00 p.m. and feature a reading marathon, so kids are encouraged to bring their favorite books.

The protest organizers have four main requests: that the library open on weekends, that the children's and young adult section be fully functional, that the library be more accessible, and that more money be invested in libraries across the Canary Islands.

Since 2024, library users have been complaining about the problems at the main library in Santa Cruz, and at many other libraries throughout the Islands. They say these issues stem from a lack of government funding. The two state libraries in the Canary Islands, one in Tenerife and one in Gran Canaria, are managed by the Canary Islands Government.
