Tenerife Libby’s La Laguna Upsets Top-Seeded Avarca de Menorca in Iberdrola League Quarterfinals
Tenerife Libby’s La Laguna upset top-seeded Avarca de Menorca 3-1 in the Iberdrola League quarterfinals despite logistical challenges caused by storm Therese.
Tenerife Libby’s La Laguna pulled off the upset of the day in the Iberdrola League quarterfinals, securing a crucial 3-1 victory over Avarca de Menorca, the top-seeded team from the regular season. The win was a testament to the team's resilience, especially given the logistical hurdles they faced.
The match was relocated to the Colegio Cisneros Pavilion after storm Therese forced the temporary closure of the Pablos Abril facility. Despite the disruption, the hosts remained composed. After dropping the first set 23-25, Tenerife fought back to level the match 25-20. They then clinched the next two sets (25-21 and 31-29), with the final set proving particularly dramatic as the team saved five set points to seal the win.
This victory gives Libby’s a significant advantage heading into the second leg, which will take place on March 28 at the Pavelló Municipal D’Esports in Menorca. Strong performances from Carolina Camino, Alli Cudworth, and the duo of Pelland and Akamere have shifted the momentum, putting the Tenerife side in a strong position to advance to the next round.
In the Superliga 2, Canary Islands teams saw mixed results. In the women’s competition, promotion-bound teams Cuesta Piedra, Élite, and Fedes all finished their matches with wins against Astillero, Zaragoza, and Paterna Licea, respectively, while Arona ended their season with a loss to Leganés. It was a tougher day for the men’s teams, as both Arona—who are preparing for the promotion playoffs—and the Cisneros reserve team suffered defeats against Vinarós and L’Illa Grau.
