Tenerife LGBTIQA+ Memorial Destroyed, Groups Demand Action
An LGBTIQA+ memorial plaque near García Sanabria Park in Santa Cruz de Tenerife was destroyed, sparking widespread anger and calls for an investigation and immediate replacement from several civil rights groups.
Several groups in Tenerife announced on Monday that the LGBTIQA+ memorial plaque near García Sanabria Park in Santa Cruz de Tenerife had been destroyed. This plaque, a significant symbol in the fight for civil rights, was found completely ruined. Its destruction has sparked widespread anger.
Organisations like Aperttura, Caminar Intersex, Pedro Zerolo Foundation, Diversas, LGBTIQ+ Comarca de Acentejo, Libertrans, and Transboys have united to demand a strong reaction. The incident came to light through social media posts by researcher Daniasa Curbelo and photographer Miguel G. Morales. These groups have called the act a "serious attack" on the rights of the LGBTIQA+ community.
The organisations involved believe this is more than just an isolated incident or simple vandalism. They claim it shows "the alarming rise in hatred promoted by the fascist far-right." In a joint statement, they have asked the Directorate General of Diversity of the Canary Islands Government to replace the plaque immediately. It was first put up in 2021.
The plaque marked a spot of great historical importance. According to the groups, García Sanabria Park was central to the community's resistance and meetings during Franco's dictatorship and the period of democratic transition. It was also here that the idea for the first Pride demonstration in the Canary Islands was born, which took place in June 1978.
Besides replacing the plaque, the groups have urged the Santa Cruz de Tenerife City Council to start a thorough investigation. Their aim is to identify those responsible for this attack on the city's social heritage and hold them accountable. They are also calling for more surveillance in these important areas to stop similar incidents from happening again.
The associations remember, "It's a specific stop in our memory. During the last island demonstration, we paused here to remember the struggles of those who came before us." They believe destroying this landmark is an attempt to erase the history of sexual diversity in the islands.
The news has caused a strong reaction on social media, with activists and citizens demanding that authorities stand firm in defending diversity. The García Sanabria plaque was more than just a piece of metal; it was a reminder that today's rights were won through decades of persecution and bravery.
Key organisations among the signatories include the Association of Transsexual People of Tenerife (APERTTURA) and the LGBTIQA Diversas Canarias Association. They have vowed not to let fear or intolerance take hold in Santa Cruz de Tenerife's public spaces.
