Tenerife Launches Vocational Training Initiative to Boost Youth Employment in Circular Economy

Tenerife is finding new ways to boost youth employment by connecting vocational training with natural resource management. The Tenerife Island Council recently hosted a technical training day at the island’s Environmental Complex as part of its "Second Chance" project. This 2.4-million-euro initiative has already created 148 paid training contracts for unemployed individuals.

Co-financed by the Canary Islands Employment Service and the European Social Fund Plus, the project aims to do more than just offer classroom learning. It serves as a bridge to the workforce, helping to reduce school dropout rates and youth unemployment by combining theory with hands-on experience. By focusing on the circular economy, the program highlights a growing job market that is eager for qualified workers.

During their visit to the facility—which processes over 1,500 tons of waste daily—participants learned directly from experts about safety protocols and waste treatment. Efraín Medina, the Minister of Employment and Education, emphasized the importance of steering young people toward sustainable careers. Meanwhile, Blanca Pérez, head of the Department of Natural Environment and Sustainability, noted that seeing the island’s infrastructure firsthand helps students better understand their role in the community.

Alejandro Molowny, the Island Director of Sustainability, also pointed out the value of introducing students to the research happening at the complex. The session covered essential topics for modern public management, including waste reduction, improved recycling, and responsible consumption—all of which are vital for meeting European standards for environmental protection and waste management.
