Tenerife Launches Spain’s First Pet-Friendly Museum Pilot Program
Tenerife has launched a three-month pilot program allowing pets inside select museums, marking the first initiative of its kind in Spain.
Tenerife is changing how it manages its public heritage by opening several cultural centers to pets. The Tenerife Island Council (Cabildo de Tenerife) has launched a three-month trial program that allows visitors to bring their pets into specific museums, reflecting the growing number of households that include animals.
While some outdoor spaces in Madrid already allow pets, this is the first time such a policy has been introduced for indoor museums in Spain, drawing interest from major international institutions.
The pilot program will begin at the Museum of Nature and Archaeology (MUNA), as well as the Casa Lercaro and Casa de Carta, both part of the Museum of History of Tenerife. However, the Museum of Science and the Cosmos is excluded from the trial because its sensory and sound-based exhibits are not suitable for animals. Other locations, including the Cueva del Viento, the CEDOCAM, and the Castle of San Cristóbal, are also not included in this phase.
To ensure a safe and comfortable environment for everyone, the Council has introduced strict rules. Only two animals are allowed in a room at one time, and they must be kept on short, non-extendable leashes. Owners are legally responsible for their pets and must follow all instructions from museum staff, who may restrict access to certain areas to protect exhibits or ensure visitor safety.
The island administration says this policy is designed to make culture more accessible. By removing barriers for pet owners who might otherwise be unable to visit, Tenerife hopes to modernize its cultural offerings and better reflect modern life, while carefully balancing inclusion with the needs of all museum-goers.
