Tenerife Launches Smart Lane Project to Tackle TF-5 Traffic Congestion
Tenerife has launched public consultations for a 6.2-million-euro "smart" lane project on the TF-5 to reduce congestion, alongside plans for a 2.9-million-euro rehabilitation of the TF-82.
Tenerife is set to overhaul travel in its metropolitan area. The Island Council has officially opened the public consultation process for a new "smart" bus and high-occupancy vehicle (HOV) lane on the TF-5. This major road, which carries over 100,000 vehicles daily, is one of the busiest in the Canary Islands, and the project aims to finally tackle its chronic traffic congestion.
The 6.2-million-euro project will span a 9.7-kilometer stretch of the highway. Its standout feature is its flexibility: using Intelligent Transport Systems, the left lane will be reserved for buses, taxis, motorcycles, and vehicles with multiple passengers during peak hours. At all other times, the lane will revert to normal use. Officials estimate this will significantly improve traffic flow, potentially cutting travel times by 50% for those heading uphill and 21% for those heading downhill.
This approach marks a shift away from traditional road widening, which is often limited by the island’s geography and environmental concerns. Instead, the council is focusing on managing existing space more efficiently. The public can submit feedback on the proposal until April 17, a key step before the project goes to tender.
Separately, the Island Council has approved a 2.9-million-euro project to fully rehabilitate the TF-82 road between El Tanque and Los Silos. This seven-month project will serve the 11,000 drivers who use the route daily. It involves more than just repaving; the work includes improving drainage, clearing verges, and updating safety signs and barriers. This project is also open for public review for 20 days, ensuring transparency as the island works to improve its critical infrastructure.
