Tenerife Launches Safety Campaign Ahead of August 12 Solar Eclipse

Tenerife authorities are launching a safety campaign ahead of the solar eclipse on August 12. The Museum of Science and the Cosmos (MCC) is leading the initiative, titled "A unique view. Take care of it," and will begin distributing certified solar viewing glasses to visitors starting July 27, while supplies last.

Because the eclipse will only be partial in the Canary Islands, the sun will not be fully blocked. Experts warn that this makes the event particularly dangerous, as intense ultraviolet and infrared radiation can still cause serious eye damage.

Astrophysicist Oswaldo González Sánchez is urging the public to avoid unsafe, unproven methods for viewing the sun. Using items like photographic film, X-rays, or smoked glass does not provide adequate protection and can lead to permanent retinal injury. José Carlos Acha, the Councilor for Culture, Museums, and Sports, emphasized that using approved, certified eyewear is the only safe way to watch the eclipse.

This event marks the start of a busy period for astronomy in Spain, with three major events expected between 2026 and 2028. Additionally, a partial lunar eclipse will follow just fifteen days after the solar event, offering another significant opportunity for both scientists and the public to observe the night sky.
