The Tenerife Island Council has launched a record 2.5 million euro grant program for grassroots sports, introducing a new per-athlete funding model to support over 35,000 local participants.

On March 18, the Tenerife Island Council (Cabildo de Tenerife) opened applications for its 2026 grassroots sports grants. The council is investing 2.5 million euros to support local sports organizations—an increase of 100,000 euros from last year and the largest investment of its kind to date.

Led by Vice President Lope Afonso and Councilor Yolanda Moliné, the council is introducing a new funding model based on a fixed amount per athlete. Clubs will now receive 72 euros for every registered athlete under 18 or athlete with a disability. This change is designed to help clubs plan their finances more effectively. The Cabildo expects this initiative to support nearly 400 organizations and benefit more than 35,000 athletes.

These funds are vital for keeping local sports clubs running, as they help cover essential costs like insurance, referee fees, and license processing. By providing this support, the council aims to reduce the financial burden on families and clubs, ensuring that children can participate in sports regardless of their club's ability to self-fund.

Applications will open once the guidelines are published in the Official Gazette of the Province (BOP). Once published, clubs will have 20 business days to apply through the Cabildo’s online portal. For updates and information, clubs can use the council’s anonymous WhatsApp channel at 690 372 773.
