Tenerife Launches 'Our Identity is Fashionable' Campaign
Tenerife's Department of Employment, Youth, and Education has launched "Our Identity is Fashionable," a campaign promoting the island's traditional clothing from the late 1800s and early 1900s as cultural heritage and connecting it with modern Canarian fashion trends.
The Sectoral Council for Traditional Clothing of Tenerife (CSITT) is an advisory body that works with the Island Council of Tenerife. Its main role is to inform, suggest, and guide policies related to promoting, protecting, and sharing the island's traditional clothing.
Traditional clothing is more than just clothes; it's a cultural symbol that shows a people's history and identity. Tenerife has a rich history of textiles, much of which was unknown until recently. These traditional outfits reflect different historical periods, social and economic status, and the specific regions where people lived.
Traditional clothing was mainly practical. Every piece had a purpose and was worn daily, whether for work or special events.
Here, we'll explore the traditional clothes worn in Tenerife around the late 1800s and early 1900s.
When the Industrial Revolution began, new fabrics and colors arrived in the islands. These slowly became part of what rural people wore. To help you understand these clothes better, we'll describe them from the inside out and from top to bottom.
Each piece of traditional clothing from Tenerife is a living link to the past, carrying the memories of previous generations. Learning about and sharing these garments helps us appreciate our cultural heritage and keeps this legacy alive for today and tomorrow.
The Department of Employment, Youth, and Education, led by Councilor Efraín Medina, has launched an educational campaign. The aim is to connect the preservation of our identity and traditional clothing with new trends in Canarian fashion. The campaign, called "Our Identity is Fashionable," recognizes that both are part of our evolving culture, without confusing or mixing them. It promotes traditional clothing and its crafts as key parts of our identity. The main goal is to raise awareness about the social and cultural importance of wearing regional clothing correctly and to highlight its value as a cultural heritage of our island.
