Tenerife Launches Island’s First Wheelchair Athletics School
Tenerife is launching its first wheelchair athletics school at the Tenerife Athletics Center this September to provide professional training and promote inclusive sports on the island.
Tenerife is taking a major step toward inclusive sports with the launch of the island’s first wheelchair athletics school this September. The project, led by the non-profit group Atletas Sin Fronteras (Athletes Without Borders), aims to provide athletes with disabilities a professional environment to develop their physical and competitive skills.
The school will be based at the Tenerife Athletics Center (CIAT), which is managed by the public entity Ideco under the island’s Cabildo. The facility, already a hub for traditional athletics, is being adapted to ensure it has the necessary accessibility and specialized equipment for wheelchair sports. Yolanda Moliné, the Minister of Sports, noted that these upgrades are essential for the long-term success of inclusive programs, ensuring that athletes have a clear path to progress.
Classes will initially be held on Monday mornings. While the school is starting with a limited number of spots, organizers plan to expand capacity based on demand. Training will be led by specialized coaches from Atletas Sin Fronteras.
This initiative aligns with the organization’s ongoing mission to remove barriers to exercise through awareness and adapted sports. By hosting this new school, the CIAT is reinforcing its role as a multipurpose facility, integrating inclusive sports into its regular training schedule and promoting equal access to athletics across the island.
