Tenerife’s "FARO Project" has launched a new initiative in Granadilla de Abona that brings hundreds of seniors together to promote healthy aging and combat social isolation through community-based prevention strategies.

Local authorities are making it a priority to combat social isolation and physical decline among the elderly, as shown by a recent initiative on the coast of Granadilla de Abona. Part of the "FARO Project," this event highlights a shift in public policy: moving beyond basic care toward active prevention and community involvement.

The gathering brought together over 330 people—250 from Granadilla de Abona and 80 from San Miguel de Abona—to combine learning with social connection. Organized by the island’s Department of Education for Prevention, the day focused on key areas like healthy nutrition and daily routines that help seniors maintain their independence.

Tenerife Cabildo President Rosa Dávila spoke at the event, framing these efforts as part of a wider strategy for healthy aging. She emphasized the importance of giving older adults the tools to stay active and using the natural environment to boost emotional well-being. The initiative aims to tackle both physical frailty and the growing public health issue of loneliness by creating spaces where people can connect.

By combining practical advice with a shared outdoor breakfast, this project reflects a new trend in Spanish social welfare: shifting from a model of simple assistance to one of prevention. Through these public events, the Cabildo hopes to ensure that the elderly remain active, valued members of their community.
