Tenerife Launches Exclusive 'Magma Tenerife' Bike
Tenerife, in partnership with Aurum Bikes and cycling icons Iván Basso and Alberto Contador, unveiled the "Magma Tenerife" bicycle, an exclusive edition celebrating the island's unique landscapes and its significant role as a premier cycling destination.
Tenerife has unveiled its very own special bicycle. On Tuesday, the Museum of Nature and Archaeology hosted the international launch of the Magma Tenerife bicycle, an exclusive edition created through a partnership between Aurum Bikes and Turismo de Tenerife, under its "Tenerife Awakens Emotions" brand.
The new design, presented by Lope Afonso, Vice President and Tourism Councillor of the Cabildo de Tenerife, alongside Aurum Bikes owners Iván Basso and Alberto Contador, celebrates the island that inspired the brand's essence.
The frame's gradient blues represent the journey from the deep ocean to the peak of Teide, from sea to sky, as Alberto Contador explained during the presentation. Each color layer reflects Tenerife's dual nature: the calm of the Atlantic and the powerful inner fire that formed the island.
Topographical lines of Teide are etched onto the frame, mirroring its history and the paths that climb towards the clouds, where the bicycle and the landscape become one. "Magma Tenerife is more than just a bicycle: it is a symbol of origin and destiny. The culmination of a spirit," states the motto for this innovative model's launch.
It was in Tenerife, amidst its volcanic landscapes dominated by Teide, that Ivan Basso and Alberto Contador formed their bond as cyclists and creators. In the island's rugged mountains, an idea was born: to transform the earth's energy into movement, and origin into impulse. This led to the creation of Aurum, and with it, its ultimate expression: Magma. Now, taking this concept further, the Magma Tenerife has arrived.
"The launch of the MAGMA Tenerife is much more than just presenting a bicycle; it confirms a deep connection between our island and the world of cycling," stated Lope Afonso, Vice President and Tourism Councillor of the Cabildo de Tenerife.
Afonso added that the fact that two sports figures like Alberto Contador and Ivan Basso found inspiration in Tenerife to create Aurum, and now return to dedicate an exclusive edition to the island, "demonstrates the enormous potential the island has as a destination for training, innovation, and unique experiences." He continued, "This bicycle reflects our essence: the volcanic force that defines us, the diversity of our landscapes, and the emotion that every kilometer ridden in Tenerife awakens."
Alberto Contador shared that "Tenerife has always been a very special place" for him. "During my time as a professional cyclist, I spent many weeks training on Teide, seeking peak form. It was precisely there, years later, that the idea of creating Aurum was born with Ivan. Therefore, returning now with this project feels like completing a circle. The Magma Tenerife represents that origin: the place where everything began and the inspiration that led us to create our own bicycle."
Iván Basso commented that "Tenerife is part of Aurum's history." He explained, "Here the idea was born, and here we return with a bicycle that symbolizes that bond. The Magma Tenerife is not just a special edition; it's a way to pay tribute to the island, its roads, its landscape, and everything it represents for the cyclists who have trained here. For us, this project has enormous emotional value and solidifies a bond that is now forever."
Dimple Melwani, CEO of Turismo de Tenerife, stated that "Tenerife embodies Aurum's values with Magma Tenerife: ambition, challenge, and passion. It's a tourist destination that has established itself as one of the most complete environments for high-level cycling." Melwani noted that "Tenerife's landscape, altitude, and climate offer unique conditions to foster an environment where cyclists face real competition situations." She added, "There is no better setting than Tenerife to inspire two great athletes to present Magma Tenerife, because Tenerife not only tests endurance, it awakens a passion for cycling."
The event, held in the Patio de los Flamboyanes at MUNA, was attended by Cabildo de Tenerife councillors José Carlos Acha and Yolanda Moliné, Ideco CEO Manuel Gómez, a wide representation from Tenerife's cycling community, and national and international press.
