Tenerife Launches Competition to Boost Sustainable Business Innovation
The Tenerife Island Council and the local Chamber of Commerce have launched a sustainable business competition to foster circular economy projects and promote environmental innovation across the region.
The Canary Islands have taken a major step toward a greener economy with the launch of a new competition for sustainable business ideas. Organized by the Tenerife Island Council and the Santa Cruz de Tenerife Chamber of Commerce, the initiative aims to find and reward projects that promote a circular economy and have the potential to grow within the local market.
This move aligns with broader European and national efforts to move away from a "throwaway" culture and toward more sustainable resource management. According to officials Blanca Pérez and Alejandro Molowny, the judges will prioritize the practical viability of each proposal. They will evaluate entries based on technical criteria, including water and energy efficiency, waste management, and how well the projects align with the United Nations' 2030 Agenda.
Entrepreneurs have until September 30 to submit their applications. The top three projects will receive cash prizes of 1,000, 500, and 250 euros, with an awards ceremony planned for November.
Beyond the prize money, the competition aims to diversify Tenerife’s economy by encouraging businesses that have a lower environmental impact. As waste management and energy efficiency become increasingly important for island regions, the Council hopes this initiative will foster a business community capable of providing real-world solutions to the island's unique environmental and geographical challenges.
