Tenerife Launches Ambitious Marine Conservation Campaign to Recruit 2,000 Volunteers
The Tenerife Island Council has launched the "Reconnect with the Tide 2026" campaign, aiming to recruit 2,000 volunteers to bolster marine ecosystem protection and waste reduction efforts across the island.
The Tenerife Island Council (Cabildo de Tenerife) is stepping up its efforts to protect the island's marine ecosystems by launching an ambitious new volunteer campaign. To mark World Oceans Day, the council aims to recruit 2,000 volunteers this year, doubling the participation seen in 2025.
The initiative, titled "Reconnect with the Tide 2026," is designed to foster a deeper, long-term commitment to the health of the island’s waters. While last year’s efforts involved 1,000 volunteers across 33 events, this year’s program is more extensive, spanning five weeks of activities.
This past Sunday, the Office for Environmental Participation and Volunteering (OPVAM) coordinated a major event at twelve key coastal locations. Around 400 volunteers took part, focusing on both removing plastic and solid waste and educating the public about local marine life.
These efforts are part of a broader strategy to comply with national waste and circular economy laws, which require local governments to take an active role in reducing marine pollution. By moving beyond simple one-off cleanups, the Cabildo aims to turn public engagement into a consistent tool for environmental monitoring, making the protection of Tenerife’s coastline a core priority for the island.
