Tenerife has launched a €9.8 million tender to modernize the La Laguna transport interchange, with a 20-month structural redesign set to improve capacity and passenger flow for the hub's five million annual users.

The modernization of the La Laguna transport interchange—a vital hub for Tenerife’s metropolitan area—is entering its final phase. The Island Council and the public transport company Titsa have announced the tender for the €9.8 million project, which aims to better serve the 1,500 vehicles and 36 bus lines that pass through the station every day.

The contract is expected to be awarded this August, with construction scheduled to take 20 months. The project goes beyond a simple facelift; it involves a major structural redesign. Key improvements include adding a new floor to connect directly with the Padre Anchieta pedestrian walkway, installing large glass panels to bring in more natural light, and reorganizing the interior to improve passenger flow.

Because the station serves over five million passengers annually, a contingency plan is in place to keep services running during construction. A temporary terminal will be built on land provided by the University of La Laguna (ULL) at a cost of €1.2 million, and 17 temporary bus stops will be set up on Calle Ángel Guimerá to handle the affected routes.

This upgrade is part of a broader island-wide strategy to support public transport, which saw a record 87 million passengers last year. The project was made possible through close cooperation between the Island Council, the La Laguna City Council, and the university.

Looking ahead, authorities are also conducting studies to assess the condition of other stations and stops across the network. These efforts will focus on essential maintenance, such as repairing roofs and upgrading sanitary facilities, to ensure the entire system remains safe and reliable for passengers.
