Tenerife Launches €800,000 Strategy to Decentralize Cultural Access
The Tenerife Island Council has launched an 800,000-euro, two-year initiative to decentralize the arts by funding professional productions and municipal venues to ensure equitable cultural access across all rural and urban communities.
The Tenerife Island Council has launched a two-year strategy to bridge the cultural gap between the island’s busy urban centers and its smaller, rural communities. By investing 800,000 euros, the council aims to ensure that a town’s size or wealth no longer limits its residents' access to the arts.
The investment is split into two main areas:
First, 300,000 euros will support professional stage productions. Running from December 2025 to November 2026, this funding is designed to help local creative companies develop their work and strengthen the island’s professional arts sector.
Second, 500,000 euros has been set aside for the Network of Municipal Performing Spaces (REEM). From April 2025 to May 2026, this fund will help local theaters and cultural centers host consistent, high-quality performances. Vice President Lope Afonso and Culture Minister José Carlos Acha emphasized that the goal is to make the arts a regular part of daily life in every municipality, rather than an occasional treat.
This new approach focuses on decentralization, aiming to make culture accessible to everyone, regardless of where they live. By supporting both the creators and the venues that host them, the Island Council hopes to complete the cultural cycle—ensuring that artistic performances reach every corner of Tenerife and that access to the arts is no longer determined by geography.
