Tenerife has launched a 21-million-euro tender to upgrade its road lighting system to energy-efficient LEDs and implement a proactive maintenance model to enhance safety for daily commuters.

Tenerife is upgrading its road lighting system. The Island Council has launched a new tender to move away from reactive repairs toward a more efficient, proactive maintenance model.

The project is expected to cost 9.9 million euros over the first three years, with an option to extend the contract to five years for a total of 21 million euros. This initiative will improve safety for the more than 100,000 people who use these roads daily. The work is divided into two zones: the northern sector, covering major routes like the TF-5 and the Las Aguas tunnel, and the southern sector, which includes the TF-1, TF-2, and the Outer Ring Road.

The new contract requires 24-hour monitoring and a strict response protocol, mandating that any issue affecting road safety must be fixed within 24 hours. The contractor will be responsible for everything from managing control centers and checking light levels to routine cleaning and preventative maintenance.

Led by Rosa Dávila and the Highways department under Dámaso Arteaga, the government is prioritizing both safety and technology. A key part of the plan is replacing existing lights with energy-efficient LED technology. This shift will lower electricity costs, reduce the island’s carbon footprint, and improve visibility on major roads, all while meeting European sustainability standards.
